Regional Environmental Health Officer, Jamaica

The ideal candidate will meet the following minimum qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health (Health Related Science or Public Health Inspection)
• Master’s Degree in Public Health or equivalent; and
• Four years’ related experience in Environmental Health, Sanitary Engineering or Public Health Inspection
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience

In addition, the candidate will possess:
• Ability to organize and coordinate the work of others and work as part of a team
• Well developed oral and written communication skills
• Highly developed analytical skills
• Research methodology and problem solving skills
• Excellent human relations skills
• Computer skills

Key responsibilities will include:
• Formulating/developing, prioritizing, advising and evaluating environmental health related programmes for the Region.
• Advising the Regional Technical Director and local boards on environmental issues. Monitoring and ensuring compliance with established public health practices.
• Liaising with Government and non-Governmental organizations on environmental health issues.
• Coordinating the preparation and development of the Regional Strategic and Operational Plans on environmental health, which are consistent with national policies and priorities.
• Providing technical guidance to relevant staff at the parish level in the development and implementation of Environmental Health Programmes
• Monitoring the activities of the Public Health Inspectors in the Region to ensure adherence to environmental health standards in the implementation of the programmes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Functions
• Participates in identifying special needs in community in relation to Maternal and Child
Health.
• Prepares regular schedules for ante-natal visits/post-natal/child welfare visits.
• Gives ante-natal care at clinics and arranges follow-up.
• Estimates haemoglobin level of clients, using appropriate reagents.
• Refers high risks patients to type II, III and IV Health Centres and hospitals as
appropriate.
• Collects specimens for laboratory tests (stools, blood, pap smears).
• Conducts follow up visits of obstetric high risk patients and defaulters.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education
Certificate/Diploma/BScN from accredited School in General Nursing
Midwifery Certificate: 1st Level Certificate, 2nd Level Management/Advanced Nursing Administration.

Special Requirements
Registered with Nursing Council of Jamaica as RN, RM. Minimum of six (6) years professional education including Nursing/Hospital Administration and four (4) years exclusive clinical experience.

Experience
Four (4) to five (5) years management practice in addition to clinical practice.
